'Be The Change' With Free JeffCo Family Leadership Class

Adults and teens create a civic project to help families over 20 weeks with free babysitting and meals provided.

LAKEWOOD, CO – Do you have a great idea for a civic project that can help families in your neighborhood? A free 20-week leadership course to develop civic involvement and to create a unique project is now being offered in Jefferson County for the second year.

The Family Leadership Training Institute class will offer local JeffCo adults and teens residents the chance to meet and interact with local government leaders and find non-profit resources for your own civic project. FLTI is a free, 20-week course designed to strengthen family involvement and leadership skills. Participants create their own project based on their individual passion and what they want to change in their community.

The class meets once a week with Spanish interpreters, free childcare and dinner is provided. Two classes run at the same time, one for adults and one for teens ages 11-15.

Participants take series of interactive sessions where they learn public speaking, how to frame problems and solutions and who to contact in the community to get things started. The class spends a day at the Capitol getting to know state legislators and will have local elected officials speak to the class during the 20 weeks. The group encourages applications from both youth and adults in partnership or as individuals.

Here are the projects set up by members of the first JeffCo class last year.
