Colorado Ground Beef Recall After 1 Death, 17 Illnesses: USDA

Ground chuck beef packaged in June Cargill Meat Solutions may be contaminated with E. coli, the USDA said.

FORT MORGAN, CO – Cargill Meat Solutions issued a recall for approximately 132,606 pounds of ground chuck beef that may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O26, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The beef was produced and packaged on June 21, 2018. Ten different ground beef products were subject to recall (see list here. View Labels here). The products bear establishment number “EST. 86R” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

One person has died and 17 people were taken sick between July 5 - July 25, 2018 after consuming the ground beer, an epidemiological investigation showed.

Now the agency is worried that some of the potentially contaminated beef may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. If you have this beef in the freezer, either throw it away or return it to the store, FSIS said.

Symptoms of E. coli include diarrhea (sometimes bloody) and vomiting. Severe cases can lead to more complications, such as kidney failure.
