Denver Food Distribution Continues Friday At Wonderbound Campus

Distribution kicks off at 10 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m. or until supplies run out.

DENVER — Food distribution through the Globeville, Elyria-Swansea Coalition Organizing for Health (GES) will again be available this week in Denver at the Wonderbound Campus on E. 40th Avenue.

In a community notice, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said the food distribution will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until supplies run out. The mayor will be in attendance starting at 10 a.m.

Items to be distributed include food boxes, baby diapers, baby formula, pet food, face masks and hand sanitizers. Attendees will also be eligible to sign up for SNAP benefits and register to vote and win a prize giveaway from KS 107.5.

Christian Jimenez, deputy director of community outreach for the Denver mayor's office, told Patch other items like feminine hygiene products and razors are also available to those who need them.

On Friday, the mayor's office is also donating 100,000 face masks to small nonprofits throughout the community. The masks will then be donated to small businesses, churches and residents in need of face coverings, Jimenez said.

The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will also be on site on Friday to help residents register to vote, the deputy director said. On average, the fraternity has registered 30 to 50 first-time voters each week since the initiative began.

The GES food donation setup also provides coronavirus testing and free flu shots to residents, he said.

The donation site began in April, Jimenez said. In its first month, 100 boxes of produce were donated. Now, the site provides some 60 tons of food — including meat, dairy and snacks, lunches and breakfasts for kids — each week.

All told, over $1.5 million worth of food has been donated to families, amounting to nearly 2 million servings.

"It has been an incredible opportunity to serve our residents in this capacity," Jimenez said.

Those hoping to donate to the effort are encouraged to contact partners We Don't Waste, WeCycle and the Denver Rescue Mission.

The city said its distribution partners include the GES Coalition, SAME Cafe, We Don't Waste, Weecycle, KS 107.5, SarCo, Bank of America, My Vision Nutrition, El Coco Pirata, Denver Rescue Mission, Denver Votes, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Hunger Free Colorado and Denver Police Department.
