According to police, a Medina alert is issued when cops have the license plate number or the identity of a driver when a vehicle is involved in a hit-and-run crash that caused serious bodily injury.
The alert is named in honor of Denver's Jose Medina, a 21-year-old valet who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in 2011. According to police, "a taxi driver witnessed the event, followed the driver and gave police the license plate number, leading to the capture and arrest of the suspect who was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 12 years for a hit-and-run resulting in death."
