Here are the top stories today in Denver:
- Dogs off leash is the number one problem in Denver's parks. Denver residents are breaking the city's leash laws more often, allowing their pets roam freely in Denver's parks, on trails, and in open spaces. The increase in off-leash pets has led to numerous complaints of animal attacks and forces the city's park rangers to increase patrols and issuing more citations. (CBS4)
- The conversation about Denver's future kicks off at CU Denver. The inaugural 5280 Thought Forum hosted a series of conversations centered around concepts like the vibrancy of the urban core, managing population growth, and finding a balance between the outdoor industry and our natural resources. (CU Denver)
- After 65 years in Jefferson County, Bandamere Speedway is searching for a new home. The National Hot Rod Association has announced that after 2023, Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado, will be departing from its current location. The Bandimere family has agreed to sell the property and are now actively searching for a new home for the speedway. (9News)
- Legislation is winding its way through the state capital that would alter how municipalities manage land use and zoning. The contentious bill on land use intends to alter how neighborhoods in the fast-growing Colorado cities are constructed. Over the past five years, the State of Oregon and cities like Minneapolis have embraced similar polices that promote construction with an aim at reducing housing costs. (CPR)
- Denver's Fair Election Fund probably needs some tweaks after numerous candidates that received funding only got a fraction of the votes cast. According to an analysis by Axios Denver, Denver allocated over $1.7 million in taxpayer funds to candidates running in this month's municipal election who were deemed unlikely to win. Of the total amount, the majority, which amounted to $1.4 million, was distributed among nine mayoral candidates who were unable to secure even 5 percent of the votes. (Axios)
