Here are the top stories today in Denver:
- A Wheat Ridge business owner was inside their shop when a car crashed into it. A suspected DUI driver veered into oncoming traffic before colliding with a local business, Swiss Flower and Gift near Kipling Street and 44th Avenue. The store's owner, Heidi Haas-Sheard, said that her husband was present inside the shop during the crash but was unharmed in the crash. (FOX31)
- A Denver police officer has been arrested and accused of embezzling over $8,000 from their off-duty job. Denver Police officer Ryan Roybal has been arrested on charges of felony theft for allegedly billing time he did not work at a private employer while he was off-duty — resulting in the theft of thousands of dollars. DPD confirmed the arrest and stated that Roybal has been placed on unpaid administrative leave. (KDVR)
- The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank is distinctly different from past bank crashes. Following the biggest bank failure in the United States in over 10 years, regional bank stocks took a sharp decline. This occurred as the federal government, with the 2007-2008 financial crisis still vivid in the minds of many, acted quickly to assure Americans that the U.S. banking system remained stable, reminding some of the Savings and Loan Crash in Colorado in the late 1980s. - Suncor is reopening its Commerce City refinery. drops in gas prices that increased when Colorado's sole petroleum refinery shut down may not be met with enthusiasm by locals who have been exposed to Suncor's pollution for years. (CO Sun)
