Traffic Headaches Ahead For Sunday's Rockies/Broncos Games

Denver beware: Simultaneous soldout games for the Rockies and Broncos on Sunday will mean crazy traffic downtown.

DENVER, CO – In the calendars of professional sports seasons, there's a point where baseball season and football season overlap. In Denver this Sunday, that point will mean crazy traffic downtown as the Denver Broncos play their season kickoff game and the Colorado Rockies play in the National League West.

On Sunday the Rockies' first pitch will be thrown at 1:10 p.m. and the Broncos will kickoff at 2:25 p.m. Both games are sold out.

Denver police want to help you navigate the "influx of fans around both stadiums," and encourage sports fans to plan ahead.

Gates at both Broncos Stadium (formerly Sports Authority, formerly Mile High,) and Coors Field open two hours before the game. DPD encourages fans to come early to avoid the worst traffic.

Here are DPD's transportation tips for this Sunday:

  • Try mass transit – RTD provides many options to and from both venues and is beefing up service for this Sunday. If you have never tried RTD, Sunday is your day to do it! Look up the best route by visiting http://www.rtd-denver.com.
  • Carpool – either with a designated driver or a ride-share service. Fewer cars on the roads and highways means less traffic, plus it removes the risk of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol – making it safer for all!
  • Allow extra time – If driving, allow time to arrive and park, and remember the rules our friends at Denver Public Works says about parking around Broncos Stadium at Mile High. Broncos stadium on-site parking will be sold out by 10:30 a.m., so if you don’t already have a permit, plan to avoid the stadium and park off-site at locations such as the Pepsi Center, Denver Aquarium or Auraria Campus.
  • Ride your bike, or use bike sharing – There is free bicycle valet parking near Gate Four at the Broncos Stadium, and bicycle parking around the stadium. Also, bike parking is available at Coors Field near Gates A, B and E.
