Here are the top stories in Denver today:

  1. Car thefts and break-ins have brought Broomfield neighborhood together to fight crime. Residents of the Via Varra neighborhood in Broomfield are raising concerns about a surge in car theft and break-ins. Despite being home to luxury apartments, condos, and hotels, the area has recently become a hotbed for property crime. (Patch)
  2. Check out Denver’s Public Art. The City and County of Denver is committed to its public art program, having invested over $40 million in new public art commissions and amassed a collection of over 400 pieces. The collection encompasses a variety of artistic styles, ranging from traditional sculptures and paintings to contemporary forms such as sound art, projection and light-based works, interactive new media pieces, temporary fiber-based works, and performance-based works. (Cherry Creek Chronicle)
  3. Do the freight railroads in Denver endanger the safety of its residents? Petroleum and other toxic chemicals, such as those that spilled in East Palestine, Ohio, earlier this month, used to be a rare occurrence. However, this has changed in recent years, and if a proposed railway project in Utah is approved, the number of rail cars carrying hazardous chemicals through Denver could increase further. (Denverite)
  4. The race for public money has candidates scrambling before Fair Elections Fund deadline. The Fair Elections Fund has led to a surge in the number of candidates running for office in 2023. With the implementation of the fund, there is a new deadline: Feb. 28 is the final day for contributions to municipal candidates to be matched. As a result, candidates participating in the fund are now racing to gather as many qualifying contributions as possible before the deadline. (Westword)
