📰 News we're reading

• Eagle County passes $232 million 2026 budget (vaildaily.com) — Eagle County commissioners have approved a $232 million balanced budget for 2026, shaping how tax dollars and services will affect residents in and around Eagle. Spending will drop sharply from 2025’s capital-heavy year, but still funds housing, trail work, airport upgrades and key staff positions. Higher sales, lodging and property tax revenues, including a new lodging tax, help offset a big decline in federal grants.

• Prep notebook: Vail Christian basketball opens season and Eagle County volleyball players earn all-state honors (vaildaily.com) — Eagle County athletes are making noise, with local volleyball standouts from Battle Mountain, Eagle Valley and Vail Christian earning all-state and all-conference honors. Vail Christian’s boys and girls basketball teams also opened their seasons at home, highlighted by a dramatic overtime win over Cedaredge. It’s a strong start to winter sports for students representing Eagle County communities.

• Rural Colorado counties, schools to see funding boost after Congress renews longstanding federal program (vaildaily.com) — Eagle County schools and public services are set to benefit as Congress renews the Secure Rural Schools program, which channels U.S. Forest Service revenues back to rural communities. The bill, backed by Colorado’s delegation, restores and extends funding through 2026, with retroactive payments, and Eagle County Commissioner Jeanne McQueeney says it will help local districts plan and invest more confidently.
