Environmental Threats To Be Discussed At Golden Safety Academy

The Golden Fire Department will present a special discussion of natural hazards and environmental dangers.

GOLDEN, CO – The Golden Police Department's monthly Golden Safety Academy will be handed over to their colleagues at the Golden Fire Department on Monday, Feb. 11, 2019 for a discussion of environmental dangers.

The dangers and threats of wildfire, mudslide and other disasters have increased as more Coloradans are living closer to what is known as the "wildland-urban interface." Almost half of Colorado residents, or 2.9 million people now live in areas where there is risk of wildfire, a November, 2018 report by the Colorado State Forest Service showed.

The wildland-urban interface is any area where man-made improvements are built "close to, or within, natural terrain and flammable vegetation," the state forest service said. The agency recommends several tips to make your homes less susceptible to wildfire, including removing trees and vegetation (slash) close to the home, cleaning flammable debris from your roof every spring, pruning trees and using fire-resistant roofing materials.
