'Bike School' Offered In Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, CO – You may have learned to ride a bike when you first went to school, but do you know how to maneuver safely on the road with drivers, and if you're driving, do you know the rules of the road for bikes?

Four people have been killed in Denver in auto-bike crashes so far in 2018, and 19 have been injured, according to Streetsblog. As more people ride bikes and traffic increases, it becomes more dangerous for Colorado bikers and drivers to coexist.

Bicycle Colorado is hosting a series of courses to teach motorists how to be a bicycle-friendly driver and how to be a rule-abiding cyclist.

One free workshop will be held in Lakewood on Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 S. Allison Parkway. Register here.

Attend and you'll get a certificate that you're a "certified bicycle-friendly driver."

Here are some of the topics that will be covered, according to the organization:

• Common crashes between motorists and bicyclists and how to avoid them.
• Legal and illegal behavior for both motorists and bicyclists.
• How to navigate on-street bicycle infrastructure.
• Why sharing the road is the safest option for both motorists and bicyclists.

Common questions answered during a Bicycle-Friendly Driver class:

• Why do bicyclists ride in the middle of the road?
• What is the purpose of a bike box?
• What do I do if I need to turn right across a bike lane or in front of a bicyclist?
• What is the safest way to pass a group of bicyclists?
• What is a sharrow?
• Is it ever legal to drive across a double yellow line?
• What if I need to park in a bike lane? (Hint: Don’t!)

Even the most experienced cyclist commuter will learn something new, the organization promises.
