Dana Brown Gutwein Resigns From Lakewood City Council

The city council member said she's stepping down to focus on her family.

LAKEWOOD, CO — A Lakewood City Council member announced her resignation Friday.

In a Facebook post, Dana Brown Gutwein said she's stepping down to focus on her family.

"Like families all across the nation, our family faced unforeseen challenges, experienced loss, resilience," her post read. "This year has shifted my priorities and I need to turn my focus to my family, our health, and our future.

"This has been the hardest, best experience of a lifetime. Thank you for trusting me to advocate for you and to stand for progress with you."

Brown Gutwein was first elected as Ward 5 City Council member in 2015, and she was re-elected in 2019. She has served on multiple committees, including the Colorado Municipal League Policy Committee, the Denver Regional Council of Governments and the Campaign Finance Ad Hoc Committee.

"Together we expanded parkland, fought climate change, social justice, and stood up for every person in this community to have the chance to succeed and earn a good life," her post read.

"I’m most thankful for the relationships and friendships, to many to list, you are all in my heart forever. Working towards a shared vision is a bond like no other. Special thank you to Brittany Pettersen, Tom Quinn, Karen Harrison, and Mayor Adam Paul."

As of Friday afternoon, the process for replacing Brown Gutwein, whose term is set to end in 2023, had not been announced.
