Jefferson County Man Sentenced To 13 Years In Brutal Assault Case

Richard Lee Karr, 45, was sentenced to prison for badly beating his wife with a baseball bat, according to the Jefferson County DA's Office.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, CO—A Jefferson County man was recently sentenced to 13 years for brutally assaulting his wife last summer, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.

Richard Lee Karr, 45, was formally sentenced Friday.

On June 10, 2019, Wheat Ridge police said they were called to the 3600 block of Harlan on a report of a domestic violence assault. After arriving on scene, they found Karr outside the house. He told police that his wife was inside and he had assaulted her with a baseball bat.

The 44-year-old woman was transported to the hospital. Officials said she suffered serious injuries, including multiple spinal fractures.

Karr had previously strangled his wife and threatened her with a gun, according to the district attorney's office.

“To repeatedly beat his wife with a baseball bat demonstrates an alarming degree of violence,” said DA Pete Weir. “We are determined to expand resources to victims of violence who are reluctant to come forward. Our family justice center, PorchLight, will open this fall, and will offer valuable, life-saving alternatives for vulnerable victims, all under one roof.”

Karr pled guilty on July 8, 2020 to attempted second degree murder and menacing.
