'Lessen The Strain' On First Responders: Lakewood Fireworks PSA

LAKEWOOD, CO — The Lakewood Police Department teamed up with West Metro Fire Rescue to issue a public service announcement ahead of the 4th of July celebration.

In the video, Lakewood Police Chief Dan McCasky and West Metro Fire Chief Don Lombardi remind residents that fireworks are illegal in the city.

"Besides the obvious risk of fire, injuries due to fireworks are an all-too-common occurrence," Lombardi says in the video. "Even sparklers, which are often considered harmless enough for children, can burn as hot as 1200 degrees Fahrenheit and cause third-degree burns."

The fire chief asked residents to ease the burden on front line workers.

"First responders and health care professionals have been working tirelessly to protect the public throughout the COVID-19 pandemic," Lombardi said. "By simply choosing not to use fireworks, these types of incidents can be easily prevented, lessening the strain on already overtaxed first responders and emergency room workers."

To report fireworks in the city, call Lakewood police dispatch at 303-980-7300, McCasky said.

"Please have a specific address," he said. "Do not use 911 to report fireworks except in the cases of injury or fire."

"It all comes down to respect — respect for your community, and respect for your neighbors," McCasky said.

"Every year, we receive hundreds of complaints about fireworks. A large portion of these complaints come from members of the community who have scared pets, or who are military veterans who are experiencing post-traumatic stress because of the loud explosions caused by the fireworks."
