2 CT Places Land On List Of 'Best Laid-Back Beach Towns'

CONNECTICUT — Mystic and Madison have landed on a list of the "best laid back beach towns" in the Northeast from Travel + Leisure magazine.

Travel + Leisure notes that the region is known for its charming beach towns from New York to Maine. While there are plenty of popular destinations like Nantucket and the Hamptons, this list has some "lesser-known but equally lovely alternatives."

Mystic is among those and while being famous for acting as the setting of 1988's "Mystic Pizza," the town has since then "cultivated a reputation as a beach-adjacent foodie destination."

Travel + Leisure recommends a visit to Williams Beach Park, "a perfect family spot with a playground and calm waters," and a stay at the Whaler's Inn, which "is an easy walk from the downtown shops and restaurants."

The Oyster Club, located across from the hotel, gets a nod for its "freshly shucked shellfish delicacies." The Captain Daniel Packer Inne is noted for being "a relic kept intact since 1756 with seafood dishes that match its coastal atmosphere."

Madison is described as a "picture-perfect" spot off I-95 between New York and Boston. The magazine praises Madison for its "idyllic scenery, trendy shops, and great restaurants," noting it's about 10 minutes from Hammonasset Beach State Park with its two miles of pristine beach.

The Madison Beach Hotel is recommended as a place to stay, and French bistro Bar Bouchée gets a nod as one of the best restaurants in town.

Other spots on the list include Block Island, Rhode Island, and Newburyport, Massachusetts.
