Amato's Toy And Hobby Of New Britain Will Be Closing For Good

After over 60 years in downtown New Britain, community staple is saying goodbye.

A staple of downtown New Britain that drew customers from all over the state will be closing its doors.

Amato's Toy and Hobby of New Britain will be open for the final time on Monday, Feb. 28. Owners Steve and Sheri Amato announced on the store’s Facebook page they will be retiring.

“We wanted to let our customers know that, after 60+ years in New Britain, we have decided to close our store,” the couple wrote on Facebook. “When the opportunity presented itself to sell our building, we decided it was time to start the next chapter in our lives – retirement.”

Steve Amato has run the business since 1974, when he graduated high school.

“It was a tough decision to make. It’s been fun,” the couple wrote.

The store will be selling their inventory for reduced prices until then.

“Even if you don’t want or need anything, please stop by to say good-bye and sign our guest book,” the couple wrote. “We have so many customers who have also become friends and family and we will miss you all. Thank you for your loyalty and support.
