UPDATE: The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for all of Connecticut from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon.

For southern Connecticut, the weather service said a "widespread 1 to 2 inches of rain is likely, with localized amounts up to 3 inches. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will be possible."

The weather service said the heavy rain is a result of a front that will stall nearby "which could result in a flash flood threat."

"Uncertainty exists in exactly where the front sets up and thus in where the axis of heavy rain will be," the weather service said. "Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this evening as the front approaches and slowly moves through. In addition to locally heavy downpours, isolated damaging winds gusts and large hail...are possible with any thunderstorm."

For Hartford/Tolland/Windham counties, the weather service said "Rain, heavy at times may result in rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches along with localized flooding."

A flood watch has also been issued for Litchfield County from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon.

"A moisture rich environment combined with a stalled front will support periods of heavy rain tomorrow afternoon through tomorrow night with lingering rain into Friday morning. Rainfall rates up to 1-2 inches per hour combined with potential for heavy rain to repeatedly impact a given area can result in isolated to scattered flash flooding, especially in low-lying, poor drainage, and urban areas. Total rainfall amounts range 1-3 inches with locally higher amounts up 3-5 inches are not ruled out," according to the National Weather Service.

Original post: CONNECTICUT — Wednesday is predicted to be another hot, humid and uncomfortable day, but an incoming cold front is expected to bring rain, thunderstorms and potential flooding, according to meteorologists.

WFSB is calling Wednesday “another scorcher,” with the possibility of pop up showers and thunderstorms.

Temperatures are predicted to reach into the 90s again today, with humidity making it feel like it is around 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, which has a heat advisory in place through 8 p.m.

WFSB meteorologists predict “isolated late day thunderstorms are possible in advance of a cold front heading our way.”

“We’ll be monitoring for a gusty wind and/or hail from any stronger storms that develop,” the station reported.

Flooding concerns emerge

Thursday is looking to be very wet, with rain and potential thunderstorms that could cause flooding, according to meteorologists.

“While showers will be possible during the day (Thursday), the coverage and intensity of rain ramps up by the evening commute, lasting into the night, as an area of low pressure rides along the front,” WFSB reported.

3 inches of rain is possible

WFSB predicts as much as three inches of rain could fall before daybreak Friday, with any lingering precipitation ending early Friday.

After that, WFSB says Connecticut residents can expect increasing sunshine, less humidity, and much more pleasant temperatures.

Friday’s highs will be around 70 degrees in Connecticut, followed by about 80 degrees on Saturday and the low to mid-80s on Sunday, according to WFSB.
