'Like Fire': CT Residents Report Fireball Sweeping Across The Sky
Did you see it? The meteor streaked across the night sky around 8:09 p.m., glowing brightly enough to turn heads in at least 13 states.
CONNECTICUT — A spectacular fireball lit up the skies over the Northeast on Thursday night, prompting nearly 100 reports to the American Meteor Society—including a handful of bedazzled eyewitnesses right here in Connecticut.
The meteor streaked across the night sky around 8:09 p.m., glowing brightly enough to turn heads in at least 13 states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, Rhode Island and Virginia. Seven reports from skywatchers in the Nutmeg State were among the total of 95 turned in to the AMS.

Miranda M. in Groton described the phenomenon as "glowing train, like fire." An observer in nearby East Lyme concurred, calling the display a "solid stream tapered [that] out to dashes than to nothing."
Connecticut resident Kristen S. said she saw "a fireball right over the tree line probably a few miles away and after about a second it completely explodes into three sections that continued to fall for about half a second and then the fire went out/burnt away."

The fireballs have been flinging fast and furiously over Connecticut so far this month. More than 30 witnesses reported seeing a particularly bright meteor last Wednesday evening.
These unscheduled visitors are not to be confused with our previously scheduled entertainment: three meteor showers — the Draconids, Orionids and Taurids — all peak in October.
