CONNECTICUT — As Hurricane Erin churns in the Atlantic this week, it could create increased surf, waves and even potentially dangerous rip currents in Long Island Sound, according to forecasters.

Joseph Villani, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service based in Albany, said there will be “bigger surf than normal,” along Connecticut’s shoreline.

NOAA’s National Hurricane Center is warning that Erin is expected to produce life-threatening surf and rip currents along much of the east coast of the U.S. during the next several days.

However, Long Island will provide Connecticut with more protection from the storm compared to other coastal states, according to Villani.

There is currently a small craft advisory in effect, which includes Long Island Sound.

Offshore winds will be increasing up to 20 knots, with the potential for gusts of up to 30 knots, according to Villani.

The storm’s impacts are expected to be greater in Long Island Sound east of the mouth of the Connecticut River.

“This now major hurricane could bring larger swells, rough surf and rip current concerns to Atlantic facing coastline,” WFSB reports.

Block Island, the coast of Rhode Island, and the coast of Long Island could see bigger impacts, including wave height and rough surf, from the hurricane, according to WFSB.

Meanwhile, temperatures have dropped statewide thanks to a cold front which moved through the state, making it “refreshing to be outside,” according to WFSB.

WFSB predicts most of the state will have sunny skies and high temperatures in the upper 70s this week.
