New 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Forecast: Here's What To Expect In CT

CONNECTICUT — A “near-average” Atlantic hurricane season — which starts June 1 and runs through Nov. 30 — is expected this year, a forecaster with Colorado State University said.

The current forecast from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather calls for 12 named storms and five hurricanes, Philip Klotzbach, a CSU meteorologist specializing in Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane forecasts, posted to X.

The accumulated cyclone energy is expected to be “90 percent of normal” with near-average tropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures, he added.

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is also forecast to be “neutral” this year, Klotzbach said Wednesday.

Last year, there were 18 named storms, including five major hurricanes, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The last hurricane to make landfall in Connecticut was 1985's Gloria, a Category 1 hurricane that brought heavy rainfall and winds of 74–95 miles per hour. The commonly-called "storm of the century" killed at least six people, caused power outages for about 700,000 residents, and was considered the worst hurricane to hit Connecticut since 1938.

An average Atlantic hurricane season has 14 named storms — seven hurricanes, three of them major.

The 2023 season saw 20 named storms, which ranked fourth for the most-named storms in a year since 1950. Seven storms were hurricanes and three intensified to major hurricanes. An average season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
