UPDATE — A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued until 9 p.m. for Connecticut, according to the National Weather Service.
"Thunderstorms are developing just north as of 1:45pm," the weather service said. "These storms are expected to grow in coverage and move across the area through this evening. Damaging wind gusts the main threat, but hail and frequent lightning possible."
Original post: It will be hot and humid today, with the heat index making it feel like triple-digit temperatures, and scattered thunderstorms are expected to pop up this afternoon, according to meteorologists.
These storms have the potential to bring strong winds, heavy rain and lightning, according to WFSB.
The station reports temperatures will reach into the low to mid-90s today, with “oppressive” humidity and the possibility of record-breaking heat.
WFSB forecasts it will be 95 degrees, which falls short of Hartford’s current record of 98, but could beat the Bridgeport record of 93.
The National Weather Service has heat advisories in effect for today, with heat index values making it feel like it is in the triple digits in some areas. It also advises that severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon.
Thunderstorms forecast Friday afternoon/evening
WFSB is calling today a “First Alert Weather Day,” with a concern for heat-related illness due to the high temperatures, and the possibility of “strong to severe” storms this afternoon and evening, due to a cold front.
“In addition to lightning, damaging wind gusts are the greatest concern from the stronger storms that develop,” WFSB reports. “Some of the stronger storms could also produce some briefly heavy rain.”
Saturday looks good, Sunday looks potentially stormy
Saturday is looking to be a much nicer day, with sunny skies, less humidity and high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s, according to WFSB.
The station predicts Sunday will be muggy again, with more rain and possible storms in the forecast, and it is calling Sunday another “First Alert Weather Day.” The National Weather Service predicts any Sunday afternoon thunderstorms will be after 2 p.m.
