AVON, CT — Visiting a zoo is always a fun and educational experience, but seeing animals in the wild is a whole new level of exciting.

And one place to go see that is to visit the Avon Land Trust's 17-acre Oakes Preserve, which was dubbed last week by the trust as being "an absolute wildlife treasure."

Oakes Preserve is located at 65 Chidsey Road, off Waterville Road.

Earlier this month, the trust posted two videos showing just a small sample of the wildlife there — one of a coyote, and one of a bobcat.

Thanks to one trust official, the Avon Land Trust has some wildlife cameras operating at the preserve.

"The Avon Land Trust is deeply indebted to past president and current co-president Bob Breckinridge, who accomplished our acquisition of our Oakes Preserve through immense hard work and agita," wrote the trust.

"Thanks to him we were one of the first land trusts in the Farmington Valley to experiment with wildlife cams, to help bring our wildlife into your living rooms, without the pesky mosquitoes.:"

Recently, the bobcat and coyote rambled right in front of the cameras, giving a glimpse as to what folks might see there, but the trust also offers a bit of caution.

"They play a vital role in the ecosystem by keeping rodent populations in check," wrote the land trust.

"If you’re lucky enough to spot one, enjoy the moment from a distance and know you’ve had a rare glimpse into Connecticut’s wild side."
