AVON, CT — The Avon Lions Club may have had what its members called a "covid-induced slowdown," but the group says it bounced back in 2022.

Since Jan. 1, 2022, the Lions have screened the eyes of more than 1,600 students at Avon elementary schools and daycare facilities — 13 percent of whom needed a follow-up appointment — and delivered more than 130 meals to homebound residents through Meals on Wheels.

The group also collected bikes to be refurbished and donated, cleaned trail areas, helped the Red Cross process blood donors, distributed more than 400 COVID-19 at-home tests and more.

And over the last two years it has inducted 20 new members, with its member count now at 39.

"We're just getting started. We're invigorated with new ideas and new members," Heidi Zacchera, Lions' past district governor, said in a statement. "The Lions Club has always been made up of and made for the community — and the world around us. When you see a Lion event, or a member in a blue shirt, come and see what we're about."
