Avon Volunteer Fire Department Warns Residents Of T-Shirt Scam
Contrary to a text message residents may have received, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department is not selling $10 T-shirts, firefighters said.
AVON, CT — The Avon Volunteer Fire Department is warning residents of an ongoing scam claiming that fire departments are selling T-shirts.
A fraudulent text message was recently sent out stating the Avon Fire Department is selling T-shirts and that the message's recipient can get up to $10 off by clicking a link in the message, firefighters said.
"The department is not selling t-shirts," firefighters wrote on Facebook. "If there is ever a time that we would do a fundraiser like this we would put it through our official communication routes and never by text."

Firefighters described the scam as an "old phishing attempt" that is once again circulating, and they said recipients shouldn't respond to the message or click the link included in it.
In comments on the department's Facebook post, three community members said on Sunday that they received the text messages.
