Avon's Close Budget Vote Requires Recount: UPDATE
Voters went to the polls Wednesday to decide town/school spending for 2025-26, with turnout sufficient but the outcome too close to call.

AVON, CT — One question on Avon's budget was on the ballot Wednesday night, and Avon officials got one answer — "yes," albeit narrowly.
It was so narrow that a recount will happen next week just to make sure.
Wednesday's town/school budget referendum at the Avon Senior Center resulted in the budget's approval by a mere 11 votes, 924-913, paving the way for a tax increase of greater than a mill this summer.

Town officials Friday issued a notice saying a recount of the votes will take place at Building No. 1 in the Avon Room of Avon Town Hall at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20.
The combined town/school spending plan for 2025-26 is $118.62 million, a 2.73 percent or $3.15 million increase.

This, the town said, would result in a tax rate increase from 29.66 to 30.75 mills — a 1.09-mill increase.
For a home assessed at $300,000, the new budget will increase the owner's tax bill by $327.
Since voter turnout was 13.9 percent, easily above a charter-mandated threshold, the budget wasn't automatically approved, though the final outcome eliminated that possibility anyway.
According to the town charter, at least 9 percent of registered voters in town must show up at the polls for a referendum to be binding.
If the turnout is less than 9 percent, the budget is accepted regardless of the referendum's outcome.
