AVON, CT — Playhouse 44 and Raymour & Flanigan were pleased with the recent turnout and response to the Avon theater organization's inaugural “Sounds of the Season” event.

"Sounds of the Season" was a holiday concert held Dec. 12 at the Raymour & Flanigan store in Avon.

The concert featured a special choir established exclusively for the event under the leadership of George Murphy, a musician who is also on the board of directors of Playhouse 44.

Among the musical offerings were carols, traditional Christmas and Chanukah standards, even a seasonal comedy song. Singalongs were included.

In addition to music, food, cookies, custom-made holiday cupcakes, and a free prize drawing, “Sounds of the Season” collected three large bins of goods to donate to the local nonprofit Gifts of Love, including toiletries, nonperishable foods, and housewares.

Door prizes were supplied by Raymour & Flanigan, My Secret Garden, Seasons Restaurant at the Avon-Old Farms Hotel, Elements Massage, The Antique Shop of Avon, and Canton Midas.

"The event, the second performing arts partnership between Playhouse 44 and Raymour & Flanigan, proved to be fun, successful and, by virtue of its location, extremely comfortable," wrote Playhouse 44 in an announcement.

"The organizers wish to thank all who participated."

The relatively new theater group, which is a nonprofit, all-volunteer community theater and performing arts organization, is planning a big 2025.

On Playhouse 44's 2025 to-do list include:

  • A second storytelling night is scheduled for April 30 and the Avon Congregational Church.
  • A series of short, fun, informative skits to be performed on behalf of Avon's year-long celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
  • An original production on the history of comedy to be performed this summer.
  • A series of one-act plays to be performed in Simsbury next fall.
