• Avon FD's Ranks Grow With New Additions (patch.com) — Avon residents can celebrate several milestones at the Avon Volunteer Fire Department, including promotions for youth Explorer officers, new firefighter certifications, and the swearing-in of a new member. The department, which protects nearly 20,000 people in town, also invites interested locals to learn more, attend Monday evening visits, or join as volunteers.
   

• Local artist spreads holiday cheer through storefront window paintings (wfsb.com) — A local artist is brightening Avon storefronts with whimsical holiday window paintings, including an underwater-themed scene at Deepwater Seafood. Michael Genovese, who runs Mike’s Painted Signs, has decorated 45 businesses statewide, drawing inspiration from his family and hoping to involve more seniors to spread connection and goodwill. After the holidays, he’ll transform the snowy scenes into colorful spring blooms.
   

• In disputes over turf vs. grass, neither side gets entirely solid footing so far (idahostatesman.com) — Connecticut towns are wrestling with whether sports fields should use artificial turf or natural grass, and Avon is among the communities that have recently installed large turf fields. A close Glastonbury referendum to ban future turf fields highlights how divided residents are over safety, environmental impact, and costs. Advocates on both sides are now seeking compromises as more fields come up for replacement.
