Ever since its founding in the 1930’s, Hartford Symphony Orchestra has devoted their mission to providing musical excellence but also to sharing their talents with the community through various performances.This coming year, the Brass Quintet of Hartford Symphony Orchestra will be performing at Avon Free Public Library as part of the library’s Sundays at 3 Free Music Series for the community.

Let’s start a conversation about your care wishes!&nbsp;
On Monday, January 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., Peggy Coburn, MPH, Administrator of McLean’s Home Care &amp; Hospice, will present “The Conversation Project” at Eno Hall, Old Court Room,&nbsp;in partnership with the Simsbury Senior Center. The Conversation Project, a national program, is a workshop that provides the confidence people need to make important medical decisions now, in the event they cannot make them in the future. The Conversation Project encourages people to talk to their families and health care providers about their wishes for care if they become seriously ill.
Ninety percent of Americans agree that it’s important to talk to their loved ones about their wishes regarding this care, yet only 30 percent actually discuss this difficult topic.&nbsp;
Members of the Town of Simsbury Senior Center and Social Services department will also be on hand to participate in the discussion and lend their expertise. 
Parking is available in the lot behind Eno Hall, 754 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury. The event takes place in the Old Court Room on the lower level of Eno Hall. Space is limited and an RSVP is recommended to 860-658-3273 or <a href="mailto:khaberlin@simsbury-ct.gov">khaberlin@simsbury-ct.gov</a>.

Join us for a moderated conversation with author Andrew Burstein, via Zoom, to celebrate the release of Being Thomas Jefferson.
This is one of Avon’s many events to commemorate the 250th.<a href="https://www.avonctlibrary.info/americas-250th/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> Learn more here</a>.
The deepest dive yet into the heart and soul, secret affairs, unexplored alliances, and bitter feuds of a generally worshipped, intermittently reviled American icon.
Perhaps no founding father is as mysterious as Thomas Jefferson. The author of the Declaration of Independence was both a gifted wordsmith and a bundle of nerves. His superior knowledge of the human heart is captured in the impassioned appeal he brought to the Declaration. But as a champion of the common man who lived a life of privilege on a mountaintop plantation of his own design, he has eluded biographers who have sought to make sense of his inner life. In Being Thomas Jefferson, acclaimed Jefferson scholar Andrew Burstein peels away layers of obfuscation, taking us past the veneer of the animated letter-writer to describe a confused lover and a misguided humanist, too timid to embrace antislavery.
Jefferson was a soft-spoken man who recoiled from direct conflict, yet a master puppeteer in politics. Whenever he left Monticello, where he could control his environment, he suffered debilitating headaches that plagued him for decades, until he finally retired from public life. So, what did it feel like to be Thomas Jefferson? Burstein explains the decision to take as his mistress Sally Hemings, the enslaved half-sister of his late wife, who bore him six children, none of whom he acknowledged. Presenting a society that encouraged separation between public and private, appearance and essence, Burstein paints a dramatic picture of early American culture and brings us closer to Jefferson’s life and thought than ever before.
About the author: ANDREW BURSTEIN recently retired from Louisiana State University where he was the Charles P. Manship Professor of History. He is the author of eleven previous books, including The Passions of Andrew Jackson; and Jefferson’s Secrets; along with Madison and Jefferson and The Problem of Democracy. A noted Jefferson scholar and biographer, he was prominently featured in the Ken Burns PBS documentary Thomas Jefferson. He lives in Charlottesville.

George Enescu composed his beautiful Serenade Lointaine for piano trio when he was just 21 years old. Although composed in 1903, the trio was discovered only recently. This opening work explores the Romantic side of the piano trio, and the warmness of Enescu’s textures highlight his influences from the Romantic era. In his Trio #1, Op 1, Beethoven places content over form for the first time, creating an unprecedented equality between the instruments. Here, the composer is no longer simply accommodating a listener’s desire for formulaic comfort but is instead leading his audience into his own sensibilities. Beethoven’s brilliance is so compelling that his privileged-class patrons only dimly realize that he has created a pathway for artists to emerge as a significant moral force. Antonin Dvorak’s Dumky Trio is one of the composer’s best-known works, and most original. Of Ukrainian origin, dumky refers to epic, lamenting, ballads. During the nineteenth century, Slavic composers began transforming these songs into a classical form. Their brooding, introspective themes are contrasted with lively, cheerful sections. Dvorak’s trio is the most-loved of these legendary ballads.
