How to Take the Perfect Picture of the Avon Moose

Do you want to not only see the Avon moose, but also capture a great picture?

Avon Patch does too! So, we asked Andrew LaBonte, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection wildlife biologist in charge of tracking the moose population in Connecticut, for pointers.

The last sighting in the Farmington Valley was May 18 on Country Club Road and Carriage Drive, LaBonte said Monday.

"Getting a good picture takes a lot of luck, but a telephoto lens will keep you at a safe distance," LaBonte said.  

Moose aren't typically agressive animals unless it's breeding season, LaBonte said, but he still advises being cautious around any wild animal, particularly ones as big as a moose. The animals can weigh as much as 1,000 pounds, he previously told West Hartford Patch.

If you are driving around looking for the moose, be careful. Moose are more likely to come out around dawn or dusk in May and June and it can be difficult to see them on roads because of "their dark coloration and height," according to LaBonte.
