Labor Day In Avon, What's Closed?
Monday, Sept. 1, is Labor Day, with people being treated to one last long weekend of summer.
AVON, CT — With summer's unofficial end coming this weekend, folks have one more day of relaxation on Monday, Sept. 1, Labor Day.
And, as a result, the Town of Avon has announced impacts to municipal services due to the holiday. Among them:
• All town offices — Avon Town Hall, the Avon Senior Center, Avon Landfill — will be closed Monday, Sept. 1, for Labor Day. They will reopen as normal on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

The landfill will be open regular hours on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
•The Avon Free Public Library will be closed on Saturday, Aug. 30, and on Labor Day, Sept. 1, for the holiday weekend. It will reopen as normal on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

• Avon Public Schools are closed Monday, Sept. 1, for Labor Day. They will reopen as normal on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September.
It is an "annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers," wrote federal authorities.
"The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," wrote federal officials.
