Prominent Upscale Burger Chain Eyes Avon: Reports

The Avon Planning and Zoning Commission next month will deliberate and, possibly, decide on a permit application for the restaurant project.

AVON, CT — Plans to build a new Shake Shack restaurant in Avon are before town officials, with a public hearing on one application linked to the eatery continuing and action on another tabled.

Both the Hartford Courant and CT Insider are reporting Avon's proposed Shake Shack — slated for West Main Street, would be the company's seventh upscale, fast-casual burger eatery in Connecticut.

Other nearby locations are in West Hartford and South Windsor, with other Shake Shacks in Danbury, Darien, New Haven and Westport.

Shake Shack was founded two decades ago in New York City, and it currently has expanded to 262 eateries in the U.S. and 141 around the world.

A hearing for the project, with the listed applicant being Atlas Construction of Branford, was opened at the Jan. 30 Avon Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

That hearing was continued to Feb. 20, when the Avon PZC meets at Avon Town Hall, 60 W. Main St., Avon. PZC meetings are also hybrid and Zoom links will be available as well.

The construction company is seeking a special exception permit to build a so-called "Class III" restaurant at 275 and 279 W. Main St. (Route 44). Currently, that area is zoned commercial/residential.

Because this permit is still in the public hearing stages, the site plan approval process has been tabled.
