Sports Clips, Avon Presented with Award from VFW National
Veterans of Foreign Wars presents Sport Clips in Avon with an award for outstanding generosity to Help a Hero Scholarship.

AVON, CT - The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) National Headquarters in Kansas City, MO has recognized Sport Clips Haircuts in Avon, Connecticut for their participation in the VFW Help a Hero Scholarship Program. The Avon store was presented recently with a plaque of appreciation by Lee Wilson, Chairman of Veterans & Military Support of the VFW in Connecticut. Wilson, a Desert Storm veteran, also serves as District 3 Commander for the VFW in Connecticut as well as works for the VFW Department office in Rocky Hill, CT.
According to the National VFW website, “Sport Clips Help a Hero Scholarship" provides service members and veterans with the financial assistance they need to complete their educational goals without incurring excessive student loan debt. To be eligible the veteran must be a U.S. citizen, retired or honorably discharged, be on active duty or a member of the National Guard or Reserve, have completed Basic Training and the follow-on training, be separated with or currently hold a military rank of E-5 or below, can demonstrate a need for financial assistance and participate in or be accepted to or currently enrolled in a VA-approved program or school at an accredited post-secondary institution. Scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded to qualified applicants and are restricted for tuition and fees only and will be paid directly to the accredited schools.

Sport Clips Help a Hero Scholarship began in 2014. Since then 580 scholarships, totaling over $2.4M, have been awarded to deserving veterans.
The Avon Sport Clips is the ONLY store in Connecticut donating over $500 for the Help A Hero Scholarship Program. According to Wilson, “as a resident of Avon, I am pleased that this franchise at The Shops at Dale Corners, is participating in making sure any veteran who has served this country has the opportunity to receive a degree toward a better future.”

Any recently returned military veteran who is interested in applying for a Sport Clips Help a Hero scholarship is encouraged to contact Wilson at the VFW Connecticut Department office at: 860-616-2365 or spctc@vfw.necoxmail.com As National Military Services Chairman, Wilson can assist any veteran, and their family, with other programs such as Unmet Needs and Military Assistance Program (MAP) which connects the VFW with the military community and VFW Operation Uplink™ to provide troops in Afghanistan and Kuwait with Free Call Days that allow them to call home to the U.S. for free. The Sport Clips Help a Hero Scholarship program is part of Operation Uplink™. These three programs are part of an overall mission of the VFW that says “No One Does More for Veterans.”
