New Golf Course Planned In Berlin (Sort of)

The park targeted for this recreational feature formerly operated as a golf course, with a hearing on the idea slated for Tuesday, June 3.

BERLIN, CT — Berlin officials are mulling a new addition to a local park, one that allow folks to enjoy a game of golf without fear of losing a ball.

That's because the town is planning to build a disc golf course at Pistol Creek Park, which is located at 600 Spruce Brook Road.

On Tuesday, June 3, the Berlin Town Council is hosting a public hearing on the matter at its regular meeting, which is at 7 p.m. at Berlin Town Hall, 240 Kensington Road, Berlin.

In a twist of fate, the park's prior use was as the more expensive (and, some say, more aggravating) form of golf.

But it has been abandoned and eventually became a town park.

In 2022, Berlin set aside space at Pistol Creek for a dog park, where unleashed dogs could roam free.

Pistol Creek also has multiple trails, providing hikers, bikers, and joggers with a place to get fit.

Disc golf is a relatively new sport (at least compared to traditional golf), where instead of whacking a ball, players fling a disc similar to a Frisbee.

The goal is to toss the disc into a basket set up on a pole on a course, which is similar in shape to a regular golf course, only without the necessary maintenance of maintaining fairways and greens.

There is even a professional disc golf circuit, sort of the sports equivalent to the PGA.

Berlin is proposing an 18-hole disc golf course, one that is designed to avoid any interference with existing walking trails and the off-leash area for dogs.

To accommodate the installation of the baskets, some overgrown invasive shrubs will be removed throughout Pistol Creek.
