Petitions Circulating for Four Board of Education Candidates

The petitions for school board are due on Sept. 5 and town officials said there are four candidates seeking to fill the three vacant seats and one more candidate could be soon to follow.

Time is counting down and with just two weeks remaining before petitioning candidates for the Berlin school board must file, four candidates have emerged as potential contenders in the fall election.

Town officials said four different people have taken out the paperwork necessary to seek a seat for office, one of three that are available on the Board of Education, including one existing member of the school board and a former member looking to become active once again.

According to town staff, current member John Richards and former member Cynthia Kobus are joining residents Stefanie Carbone and Michelle Barnes in seeking the vacant seats. All four must obtain 130 legitimate signatures, representing one percent of the electorate in Berlin, in order to qualify for a spot on the ballot.

The Hartford Courant reported Monday that Superintendent David Erwin said the two members not seeking re-election this year, Kathleen O'Donnell-Moss and Julie Erickson, are “mainstays.”

“They have served on many committees and done so much for the schools,” Erwin told the Courant. “They are great folks. I hate to lose them.”

Town officials confirmed Wednesday that one additional candidate could seek petitions for office, but have not taken out paperwork to do so just yet.
