**News Release Submitted by Bethel First Selectman Carter**

April 4, 2025

Dear Bethel,

Budget Referendum

The Town Meeting voted to send the town and school budget to a referendum on April 22nd. Voting will take place between 6 am and 8 pm at your regular polling locations. If you will be out of town, absentee ballots are available at the Town Clerk’s office. Access the budget at: https://bethel-ct.gov/depts-comptroller.

Appraised value vs Assessed Value

When calculating taxes, state law sets the assessed value of property is 70% of the appraised value. Appraised and assessed values are on your field card on the Assessor’s page of the town website. Assessed value is also on tax bills. The current mill rate estimate is 30.41, a correction from the last update. A home appraised at $400k has a $280k assessed value. To calculate tax, divide the assessed value by 1000 and multiply by the mill rate. With the current mill rate (29.17), a $400k home is taxed at $8,168. ($280,000/1000 = 280 x 29.17 = $8,168) The estimated tax for a $400k home in the next fiscal year is $8,518. ($280,000/1000 = 280 x 30.41 = $8,515)

The Board of Selectmen has scheduled a public hearing on April 15th at 6:30pm at Town Hall in Meeting Room A. Planning and Zoning, the Board of Selectmen, and the Board of Finance will have to approve the sale.

Wi-Fi Smoke Detectors

Fire Safety Week is a long way off, but one of our neighbors contacted Town Hall this week with a great lesson. A friend’s home and dog in town were recently saved by a Ring device that heard a smoke detector. Our neighbor wanted to remind us that there are multiple options online for Wi-Fi smoke and carbon dioxide detectors that will notify you in an emergency. When you do your monthly check of your batteries, consider an upgrade!
