Bethel Officials Violated Law, Says Elections Commission: Report
Two residents filed a complaint against state officials regarding letters sent encouraging residents to approve water system upgrades.

BETHEL, CT — State elections officials ruled that five Bethel town officials violated the law by using public money to send a letter encouraging residents to approve funding for water system upgrades, reports the News Times. The State Elections Enforcement Commission ruled Tuesday that the officials violated state statute which prevent municipal funds from being used to send printed communications that advocate a position on a referendum.
The complaint was filed by residents Cynthia McCorkindale and Billy Michael against First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker, selectmen Richard Straiton Paul Szatkowski, as well as Public Utilities Commissioners Deno Guatierei and Peter Valenti.
Knickerbocker disagreed with the ruling, but said officials will not spend taxpayers' money to fight the issue further.
