Ice Cream At The Square? Perfect Timing for Summer

At The Square is Bethel's newest ice cream shop.

If you're lucky enough to have discovered Bethel's newest ice cream shop during the hottest days of July, you've probably realized it's quickly becoming a place for residents to gather and have fun away from the heat. A little under two weeks since it opened its doors, At the Square hasn't even finished decorating and stocking, but that can't keep customers away.

"It's a new experience for us," says co-owner Wilson Hernandez. "We are always enthusiastic, positively thinking this could be an opportunity."

Hernandez and co-owner Segundo Sanchez bring their experience running Colonial Carpet to the square, but this isn't the first time they've ventured into food -- as you know if you've ever been to La Mitadi Mundo in Danbury, another venture from the two. Ice cream, however, was an inspired idea.

"Segundo has two grandchildren, I have two granddaughters and we all love ice cream," says Hernandez. "Every time we go out we see how much kids love ice cream. While we were doing a job for the owner he asked if we'd like to move the carpet place here to the square."

The two passed on that offer, but then another chance presented itself when Famous Pizza put them in connection with an ice cream maker in Harrington, MA. Since then, the shop has been packed. They're not quite done -- some empty shelves along one wall will soon be filled with nuts, candy and chocolate. When it's ready, Hernandez says, the shop will hold a grand opening.

"People like the place," says Hernandez. "I think they enjoy the ice cream. It's different -- traditional, with great flavors. Hopefully they will accept us in this neighborhood and build this business. Help us grow and be part of the community!"
