Obituary: Thomas Dunbar, 69, Of Woodbridge

A U.S. Navy veteran, he worked for many years as a Roofer, a salesman, and later was an owner/operator of the former United Sewer & Drain.

WOODBRIDGE, CT — (From North Haven Funeral Home): Thomas Dunbar, 69, of Woodbridge, passed away peacefully, though unexpectedly, on Monday, October 2, 2023, at home.

He was the loving husband, soulmate, and best friend of Kit LaFumee Dunbar and they would have celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary on October 6th, 2023. When asked, “How did they meet? Tom loved to say “I put an ad in the newspaper and she answered it!”

They worked together for a short time and later that turned into their love story, 3 children and soon to be 10 grandchildren.

Tom was always so charismatic and made others smile and laugh often. If you knew him, you loved him. He was kind, caring, loving, and smart as a whip, building, owning and operating a successful company from the ground up.

Tom was born in New Haven on February 5, 1954, and was the son of the late Richard Dunbar, Sr., the late Eleanor (Molleur) Dunbar Dattilo and stepson of the late Anthony Dattilo.

Tom served his country faithfully and dutifully in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era. As an adult, Tom worked for many years as a Roofer, a salesman, and later was an owner/operator of the former United Sewer & Drain.

A former member of the Hamden Fish & Game, Tom enjoyed fishing with family and friends. He enjoyed hunting and learned and taught many survival skills and got his certification as a captain. His greatest joys included going out to dinner with his wife, and spending time with his children and grandchildren who he loved unconditionally. He loved to watch the Mets, Giants and the UConn Girls.

Father of Crystal Teal (Scott), Jamie Susi (Anthony) and Kelly Dunbar (Dan DeCamillo). Loving grandpa of Cole, Jackson, Eleanor, Claire, Hannah, Anthony, Nicholas, Gianna, Maple, and another expected in May of 2024. Loving brother of Laura McDonald (Rodger), Denise Metcalf and the late Richard Dunbar, Jr. Predeceased by his brother-in-law Edwin LaFumee. Loving uncle of Michael, Eddie, Damian, Sean, Holly, Rodge, Alec and had many great nieces and nephews. He also leaves many close friends that were dear to him and some that passed before him.

Family and friends are invited for visiting hours that will be Sunday, Oct. 8 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at The Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. A parlor service will follow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. The Interment with full military honors will be private, in Eastside Cemetery, Woodbridge, the following day.
