Rash Of Mail Thefts Prompts Woodbridge Police Alert

Police: Thieves are stealing checks from the mail, then altering and cashing them.

WOODBRIDGE, CT – The community has experienced a rash of mail thefts recently, according to police, who urged residents to take precautions.

Thieves have been stealing business and personal checks from Woodbridge residents’ mailboxes and from standalone U.S. Postal Service mail bins, police said in an announcement on Facebook Wednesday.

After stealing checks, thieves have been altering and cashing them to get “large sums of money,” police said.

An investigation is underway, with local police collaborating with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Police recommend that residents take the following precautions to avoid being victimized:

  • Avoid putting outgoing mail with the red flag raised in your mailbox.
  • Mail any business and personal checks inside a Post Office.
  • When mail arrives, retrieve it as soon as possible.
  • Use ink when filling out checks and fill out all sections completely.
  • Monitor your bank accounts for any fraudulent activity, and report any problems to your bank immediately.
