Branford Opens Warming Centers As Deep Freeze Grips Region

The Community House, and James Blackstone and Willoughby Wallace memorial libraries are open for specific hours now through Jan. 4, 2026.

BRANFORD, CT — As an influx of frigid air will impact Branford over the next several days, the town announced a cold weather advisory to include details on warming centers.

Monday, Gov. Ned Lamont activated the state’s Severe Cold Weather Protocol, which continues through noon Sunday, Jan. 4, in response to dangerously low wind chill values and sustained cold conditions expcted over the next several days. The directive is in place in part to assure vulnerable residents, particularly the unhoused and those otherwise at risk from life-threatening cold exposure, have access to warm shelter.

The following locations will serve as warming centers in Branford:

• Joe Trapasso Community House located at 46 Church Street
Tuesday (December 30) from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Wednesday (December 31) from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Friday and Saturday (January 2-3) from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

• James Blackstone Memorial Library located at 758 Main Street
Tuesday (December 30) from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Wednesday (December 31) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Friday (January 2) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Saturday (January 3) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sunday (January 4) from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The town notes that people who are sick or have been in close contact with someone who's tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 10 days should not visit any of the sites. Those who need emergency temporary shelter, please call 2-1-1 or 203-481-4248 for assistance.
