Alice lived a vibrant and full life marked by resilience, creativity, and deep devotion to her community and her faith

Alice Fredericks, age 90, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, in Branford, Connecticut. Born on February 25, 1935, in Wenham, Massachusetts, Alice lived a vibrant and full life marked by resilience, creativity, and deep devotion to her community and her faith.
Alice’s early years were shaped by both her biological and adopted families. She was born to Walter and Alvina Knowlton and raised by her adoptive parents Clifton and Anna Witt in Belchertown, Massachusetts. She was blessed with many siblings—Knowlton siblings of Beverly, Massachusetts, and Witt brothers Clifton, Kenneth, and Maynard of Belchertown.
Her educational journey reflected her determination and love of learning. Alice attended Belchertown High School before continuing at the Perkins School for the Deaf and Blind in Boston. She went on to study nursing at the Westfield School for Practical Nurses in Westfield and later pursued further education at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut.
Alice earned her LPN license and began a long career in healthcare at Milford Hospital. She also worked as a private caregiver, offering compassionate support to those in need. Later in life, she served as Secretary for the First United Church of Christ in Milford. Her passion for storytelling led her to a decade-long role as Reporter and Editor for the Connecticut Post newspaper.
A single mother with an indomitable spirit, Alice raised two children—Lauri Bradway of Richmond, Vermont, and Eric Bradway of East Haven, Connecticut—while working two jobs. Her daily commute required taking three buses through several towns—a testament to her unwavering dedication to providing for her family.
Alice’s life was rich with artistic expression and joyful pursuits. She found peace in watercolor painting (later in life), writing heartfelt letters, bird watching from her window or garden bench, walking along the beach collecting shells or sea glass, and swimming freely in the ocean she loved so dearly. Summers were especially cherished—whether spent at Roy Carpenters Beach in Rhode Island with her first husband Douglas R. Bradway and their children, or picking blackberries on Block Island with her daughter Lauri.
She had a flair for drama—in every sense—and delighted audiences by performing in local theater productions such as *The Sound of Music* and *Once Upon a Mattress*. Her adventurous spirit extended to sailing her little sunfish around the coves of Milford.
Faith was central to Alice’s life. A devoted member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for most of her years, she actively supported the Women’s Guild and St. Peter’s Youth Group. Her spirituality was deeply personal; she prayed often for others' well-being, and found community through service.
Alice experienced great love throughout her life—from marriages to Douglas R. Bradway of Springfield, Massachusetts; Albert J. Fredericks of Milford; to many cherished years with longtime life partner Richard Chandler of Milford. She also held close bonds with step-sons Robert and Albert Fredericks of West Haven. Lacking Grandchildren of her own, she babysat twins Stella and Alice Henry, watched them blossom into wonderful adults, while loving them as they were her own. But the delight of her life, were her children Eric and Lauri.
In recent years, after Richard passed, Alice had moved into the Memory Ward at Harbor Chase in Branford. The family extends many thanks to a caring, cheerful staff at the Assisted Living Facility.
Alice leaves behind a legacy of resiliency, perseverance, creativity, faithfulness, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her—and may we all carry forward a bit of her sparkle into our own lives.
Friends and family are invited to attend Calling hours for Alice at Cody-White Funeral Home in Milford on August 15, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, a mass at Saint Peters Church at 12:00 PM, followed by a burial at Kings Highway Cemetery in Milford.
