Beloved Bridgeport Soccer Coach Killed In Easton Crash: Report

Mario Licona was one of two people to die in a fiery crash on Route 58 in Easton over the weekend.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — Mario Licona, 58, is being remembered by the Bridgeport soccer program where he coached for his "passionate commitment to youth development through soccer," the Connecticut Post reported.

A Bridgeport resident, Licona was killed over the weekend in a fiery, head-on crash on Route 58 in Easton. Redding resident Florence Mahoney, 87, was also killed in the collision.

Licona coached with Bridgeport Premier FC, and in a statement, the team's head coach, David Teixeira, told the Post that Licona coached with the program for five years, and "positively impacted countless young athletes."

A married father of three, and a grandfather to two more, Licona is remembered in his obituary for always having "a smile on his face, brightening every room he entered and helping others."

Licona's family has scheduled a celebration of life from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, at Lester Gee Funeral Home, 1390 Fairfield Ave., in Bridgeport.
