Bridgeport Man Fatally Shot On Hewitt Street: Police

The shooting occurred Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A 48-year-old Bridgeport man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon at 197 Hewitt St. in Bridgeport, according to authorities.

The shooting occurred at about 5 p.m., and when police arrived, they found the victim in the front of the home with gunshot wounds to the torso.

"Medics arrived and transported the victim to an area hospital, where he passed away a short time later," said Tiadora Josef, Bridgeport's director of Public Information, in a statement.

The victim's identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin, according to Josef. Police said the victim knew his attacker.

"The Bridgeport Police Department offers our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the victim," she said.

Bridgeport police detectives are in the process of canvassing the area and speaking to potential witnesses.

The preliminary investigation suggests this incident began inside the residence and continued outside - onto the front porch of this multi-family home, according to Josef, who added that detectives "have developed strong leads in the case."

Hewitt Street was temporarily closed Thursday night between Connecticut Avenue and Hewitt Court.

The Bridgeport Police Department is asking for the public's help in solving this crime, and urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the case officer, Detective Thomas Harper, at 203-581-5239.
