BROOKFIELD, CT—A new mental health practice has opened its doors in Brookfield, Connecticut, offering compassionate, comprehensive counseling services to individuals and families throughout the region. Brookfield Counseling, which officially opened on September 15, is led by Director of Clinical Services Jacob Nicholls, LCSW, and owner Brendan Stack, who is also the owner/operator of Southbury Counseling and Southington Counseling.

“Being from Danbury and a graduate of Immaculate high School, it means a great deal to be able to give back to the community that raised me," Stack said. "Jacob leads with compassion and authenticity, and Brookfield Counseling reflects those values. Our hope is that this becomes a trusted, welcoming place for individuals and families to reconnect with strength, growth, and hope.”

For Nicholls, the new location represents both professional growth and a personal mission. Originally from Southern California, he moved to the Greater Danbury area to attend Western Connecticut State University and later earned his LCSW from SouthernConnecticut State University. After working in clinical settings including Yale and Nuvance Health, Nicholls joined Stack’s team at Southbury Counseling.

When Stack decided to open another location, he immediately thought of Nicholls to lead it.

“I appreciate him having faith in me,” Nicholls shared. “This area needs support with mental health services, and I’m happy to facilitate that.”

Brookfield Counseling offers a wide range of therapeutic services, including treatment for depression, anxiety, and grief, as well as support for families navigating the challenges of substance abuse. The team provides individual, couples, and family counseling, and offers play therapy for children as young as four years old.

Their child and family services focus on building trust and comfort through creative, evidence-based approaches. “We utilize art in play therapy, work on building rapport, and make sure each child feels comfortable,” Nicholls explained. “We also support parents with educational guidance, tips, and tools to help them navigate challenging times with their children. It’s really a wraparound effort so that every family member feels supported throughout their journey.”

Brookfield Counseling’s clients come through referrals, their website and social media, as well as through their Psychology Today listing and in-house marketing team. But what truly sets the practice apart, Nicholls says, is their deeply empathetic and nonjudgmental approach.

“We’re extremely empathetic, active listeners,” he said. “We meet people where they’re at, and we take a nonjudgmental approach. We all really care.”

For Nicholls, this work is more than a profession—it’s a calling. His own experience with mental health challenges as a teenager inspired him to pursue a career helping others. “I knew since I was 16 years old that this is what I wanted to do,” he reflected. “Going to therapy was very formative in my own journey and helped guide me. I love seeing the growth in the individuals I help. It’s very rewarding work.”

With a welcoming atmosphere and a client-centered philosophy, Brookfield Counseling hopes to become a trusted resource for individuals and families seeking meaningful, ongoing support.

“We’re very happy to be here in this community,” Nicholls said. “We welcome everyone who is interested in getting help.”
