It’s not just the forecast for heavy holiday travel moving pump prices up, according to a report from AAA Northeast. As the war in Ukraine got hotter, gas got higher, with crude oil prices up 6.5 percent last week to between $71 and $75 a barrel on renewed concerns about the potential for global supply impacts.

Tempering the price increases was news from the Energy Information Administration last week that showed demand fell sharply over the prior week from 9.38 to 8.4 million barrels a day — in line with expectations for this time of year. In the Northeast, regional supplies grew by nearly 600,000 barrels.

Here in Connecticut, a gallon of self-service regular is averaging $3.06, up three cents from last week and down two cents from last month. The national average is $3.05, down two cents from a week ago and down nine cents from a month ago.

"Regional gasoline pump prices could fluctuate in the coming weeks as geopolitical tensions around the world continue to inject unpredictability into commodities markets," said Lauren Fabrizi, spokesperson for AAA Northeast. "Prices have been relatively steady thanks to stable supplies here in the United States, but increased travel demand and international factors can easily disrupt the balance."
