Brookfield Local Hero: Grandmother Of 6, And An ICU Nurse

Deirdre Deakin was in the process of winding down her nursing career. Then COVID-19 hit, so it was "once more unto the breach..."

BROOKFIELD, CT — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented times. Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these everyday heroes.

When the going gets tough, the tough reenlist. That's not exactly how that old saying goes, but it pretty much describes the last couple of months of Dierdre Deakin's life. She has been a nurse at Danbury Hospital for over 30 years, is the mother of six grown children, and grandmother of six more kids.

Deakin, a Brookfield resident, had just started laying the groundwork to spend more time with those grandchildren when COVID-19 blew into town. She was retrained as an Intensive Care Unit nurse, and has placed those dreams of slowing down on temporary hold.

In her nomination of Deakin, Geri Hopper of Brookfield said the nurse is "selfless, caring" and gives "1000 % to her job."
