New Traffic Light Online at Federal and Laurel Hill Roads in Brookfield
Brookfield installs traffic light at Federal and Laurel Hill Roads, key to Emporium Plaza access and Streetscape expansion.
BROOKFIELD, CT — A new traffic light and pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Federal and Laurel Hill roads is now operational, according to local officials. The upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to improve access and safety in the Four Corners district and paves the way for upcoming developments in the area.
The intersection will provide access to one of the main entrances to Emporium Plaza at 731 Federal Road, where a new Food Emporium grocery store is on track to open within the next two months. A firm opening date has not yet been announced.
The traffic signal, which was required by the Connecticut Department of Transportation, marks a key milestone in the town's revitalization efforts and is expected to help regulate traffic near the busy commercial center. Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution as they adjust to the new road configuration.

The location is also tied to future phases of Brookfield’s Town Center Streetscape project. Phases 5 and 7, which are scheduled for construction in summer 2026, will extend sidewalks, roadside parking, and other pedestrian-friendly amenities west along Laurel Hill Road and north on Federal Road.
Although work on the next Streetscape phase has been delayed due to an environmental survey identifying protected plant species near the proposed construction zone, town officials said the project remains on schedule for the 2026 building season.

The Streetscape initiative aims to transform the Four Corners area into a walkable, mixed-use hub with improved accessibility and visual appeal. The first four phases of the project included new sidewalks, lighting, benches, bike racks, and parking improvements.
The ongoing enhancements come as Brookfield continues to draw new retail and dining options, including the anticipated opening of the Food Emporium and several other businesses at Emporium Plaza.
