Police ID Brookfield Man As Victim In Newtown Fatal Crash

Police have identified the motorist who died in a crash Saturday morning as a Brookfield resident.

NEWTOWN, CT — Police have identified the motorist who died in a crash Saturday morning as a Brookfield resident.

John Schmalbach, 75, was taken to Danbury Hospital for injuries and was later pronounced dead.

The Newtown Police Department, along with the Sandy Hook Fire Department, responded to a two-vehicle crash at 10:30 a.m. near Berkshire Road and Nighthawk Lane.

The two occupants of the other involved vehicle were also transported to Danbury Hospital for injuries. Police report they are in stable condition.

The investigation determined that Schmalbach was traveling eastbound in a 1983 Ford pickup truck and crossed the center double yellow line in the area of the Sandy Hook Fire Department, according to a report by Lt. Scott Smith.

Sandy Hook Fire Department, Newtown Ambulance, and a medic from Danbury Fire Department
responded to the scene.
