Canton Looking For Justices Of The Peace

Applicants are due between Aug. 1 and Nov. 1 either through a major political or the town (if not affiliated with a party).

CANTON, CT — Does anyone want to be a justice of the peace?

The Town of Canton Thursday put out the call for folks to step up and become appointed, especially if one isn't affiliated with a major political party.

When one becomes a "JOP," they become a municipal official capable of hearing minor cases, performing marriages, granting licenses, etc.

And, according to the town, one needn't be a Democrat or Republican to become one.

Those who are registered with major parties apply through their respective political parties.

But if you're not a Dem or member of the GOP, there is a way too.

Canton officials said if the applicant is not registered with a major party, they may apply to the Canton Town Clerk in their town of residence for appointment.

"This sort of appointment takes place every four years during presidential election years," wrote the town in an announcement. "Interested parties may only apply between Aug. 1 and Nov. 1 of that year."

Applications can be mailed to Canton Town Clerk, P.O. Box 168, Collinsville, CT 06022.
