Creative Kitchen and Bath A Collinsville Fixture

Business moved to the Village in 2000.

Dating back more than 25 years, Creative Kitchen and Bath has been a fixture in Collinsville for nearly half its existence.

Originally established in Torrington, the business moved to Collinsville in 2000 and for the 10 years has occupied its current location at the corner of Main and Market streets.

Business has changed a little in the last several years, mostly due to economic conditions. As a result, the company has seen a drop in additions or dramatic projects and he sees fewer of the $100,000 to $150,000 projects it did years ago and many people are looking to make smaller changes.

But the business owner said the focus of the business hasn't changed — customer service and attention to detail no matter what a person's financial situation.

"We try to fit the budget whatever way possible,” said David C. Szydlo, president of the company.

Still Szydlo said the store has made sure its quality remains high.

The level of products we have is just a little bit better,” Szydlo said. “Our mix is the best of all the manufacturers out there.”

The business offers a wide range of product lines. It's cabinetry choices include:

More than 90 percent of the company’s business comes from referrals.

He’s also seen something that never happened in the past — more discounts from manufacturers.

The business remains flexible, working with many area professionals as subcontractors. That allows the flexibility to offer start to finish services for a project or allow the customer to use their own contractor.

Szydlo is certainly no stranger in town, having grown up on the Burlington/Canton town line.

Although he holds an associate’s degree from in business from Northwestern Community College and did some training while at Miner, Szydlo mostly learned his business in a practical manner.

From 1971 to 1985 Szydlo worked for Miner Lumber.

In the early 1970s, he also put an addition on a family home, which provided some real-life experience.

“Everything’s been hands on,” he said. “That’s the way I function.”

And the business has allowed him to pass on his knowledge and help people along the way.

“It all becomes a personal relationship with people,” Szydlo said. “It’s become a way of life."
